The Evolution of Cretin Farms: A Journey from Hobby Farm to Wagyu Beef Excellence

Growing up on my grandparents' hobby farm, I spent every free moment I could there, whether it was during school holidays or after a long day of classes. The days were full of adventure, working with animals, and learning about life on the land. It was a simpler time—a time when the hustle of modern life didn’t overshadow the joys of fresh air, open spaces, and the satisfaction of a hard day's work. Those formative years left an indelible mark on me, shaping the way I saw the world and the values I would carry into adulthood.

As I got older, life became more complicated. My career in aviation took me all over the country, moving between states and taking me away from the farm life that had nurtured me. But after years of flying between cities and office meetings, I knew I wanted something different for my own family.

In 2022, my husband and I settled back in Melbourne and welcomed our beautiful daughter into the world. I wanted her to experience the same sense of freedom and connection to the land that I had growing up. A life spent more in tune with nature, more about exploration than screen time, more about animal husbandry than meetings. I wanted her to have the space to grow, the chance to build treehouses, and the understanding that life is about more than just the daily grind.

We began searching for the perfect piece of land—something big enough to not only give us that lifestyle but also to support a passion project that had been growing in my heart for years: a small-scale, ethically run Wagyu cattle breeding program. After months of searching, we found it—a property that would serve as the foundation for something bigger than we could have imagined.

In 2024, with the help of a close family friend and mentor, we acquired our foundation herd. Cretin Farms Wagyu Beef was born.

This year, in 2025, we are expecting our first heifers with calves at foot to arrive, and we are busy preparing the land with additional fencing and infrastructure to ensure the safety of our animals. Our goal is simple but powerful: to produce ethically farmed Wagyu beef of the highest quality.

Over the next few years, we plan to expand our herd by keeping young heifer calves and selling our steer calves for meat. As our herd grows, we aim to create a thriving direct-to-consumer business, where we can offer premium Wagyu beef that is both affordable and accessible. We believe that everyone should be able to enjoy the best quality meat, whether it's for grilling, smoking, or BBQing—and we want to make that possible by eliminating the middleman and bringing the meat directly from our farm to your fridge.
